Financial Institution Director Liabilities and Responsibilities
Published in Paperback by Irwin Professional Pub (April, 1996)
Authors: Douglas V. Austin and Sidney Weinstein
Average review score:

Now Available in a Fifth Edition
This book, as with all the previous books in this series, provides an excellent overview of the Liabilities and Responsibilities faced by financial institution directors.

Now in its fifth edition, Financial Institution Director's Liabilities and Responsibilities is a must read for all new board members. New editions contain updated information concerning the impact of FIRREA and FDICIA. The author can be contacted in Toledo, OH.

A great overview
Over the next few years, the community bank Board of Directors will be less of a Good Old Boy social club. Many of the CEOs we deal with are very serious about re-vitalizing their boards.

Given the competitive nature of the financial services sector, fresh thinking at the Board level is now seen as mandatory.

But if you are offered a Board seat at a community Bank, don't accept the assignment until you have read Dr. Douglas Austin's perceptive and readable analysis.

For example, did you know that you can be held PERSONALLY liable for losses resulting from fraud of officers, if ordinary care and attention would have prevented their actions?

Have I got your attention now?

Over 75,000 copies have been sold since 1984. The book is in its fourth edition.

Authors: Lake Austin Spa Resort and Terry Conlan
Average review score:

An impressive selection of fine preparations
Color photographs illustrate Fresh: Healthy Cooking And Living From Lake Austin Spa Resort, a cookbook of globally inspired, health-conscious cuisine ranging from Skordalia (a tasty legume spread from Greece), to Papacitas (potato and masa pockets with one's choice of fillings), to Moo Shu Chicken Crepes, to Spaghetti with Red Swiss Chard and Bacon. A superlative addition to any personal or professional cookbook collection, Fresh offers a culinary wealth of expressively detailed recipes and ingredient lists hallmarking an impressive selection of fine preparations.

FRESH: a wonderful cookbook!
After hearing from friends how wonderful the food is at the Lake Austin Spa Resort, I wanted to find out what all the fuss is about. I haven't made it to the spa yet to sample the food but I did the next best thing, I bought their new cookbook FRESH.

The book not only offers great tasting healthy recipes but ideas on gardening, home spa, cooking tips and much more. I think that is what makes it a great gift because it's more than just a standard cookbook. I've made a few of the recipes and I'm amazed that these recipes are low fat but taste wonderful. Everything is covered from soups, salads, meats, chicken, vegetarian, seafood with cuisines from all over the world.

A great gift for anyone that loves to cook or enjoy good food!

Gabriel Churchkitten

Gabriel Churchkitten, by Margot Austin
This is a vintage (1942) children's book that is so adorable and readable you will want to read it over and over again out loud to your little ones. It's appropriate for infants to 7 years, IMO. The author has very whimsically created and illustrated the little church animals. The setting of a live-in church with the Parson Peasporridge is also very quaint. The black and white (pen and ink or ingravings?) art is frameable, so these books are getting pretty scarce and collectible.

Gabriel Churchkitten; A Return to Childhood
I remember this book from my childhood. The pen and ink drawings are delightful. The story is creative and fun. I have one copy which my grandchildren love to hear. The story appeals to ages 3 through 10, and "adult children".

Hard-Pressed in the Heartland: The Hormel Strike and the Future of the Labor Movement
Published in Paperback by South End Press (February, 1993)
Author: Peter J. Rachleff
Average review score:

Book Gives Hope for the Future
Rachleff, labor historian who "studies the past because he is interested in the future", writes the perfect and much needed antidote to Barbara Koppel's Academy Award-winning documentary about the Hormel Strike, a film that cast the P-9ers and their supporters as "hapless victims" engaged in a hopeless cause. As an academic AND an activist who personally participated in this struggle and became the chair of the Twin Cities P-9 Support Committee, Rachleff succeeds in putting things into their proper historical perspective, describing the betrayal of a community by a formerly paternalistic family owned corporation (and a DFL governor) and a rank-and-file by their own international union, but most importantly, he inspires all working stiffs by showing union democracy in action and the potential of a movement that motivates family, friends, and workers from around the country. The final chapter outlines the positive lessons drawn from these experiences and gives hope for the future of the labor movement. This is a must read for any union member and anyone thinking that they need a union.

Rachleff spotlights the working class
Peter Rachleff writes this narrative of the Hormel Strike from the prospective of the common man. His unique vantage into the Labor movement is both intriguing and compelling. He breaks with the standard fodder of analyzing union structure and instead delves into the plight of the "every-man" (i.e. the rank-and-filer). Excellent.

Healing Herbs of the Upper Rio Grande: Traditional Medicine of the Southwest
Published in Paperback by Western Edge Pr (June, 2003)
Authors: L. S. M. Curtin, Michael Moore, Mimi Kamp, Mary Austin, and L. M. S. Curtin
Average review score:

from the Medical Herbalism journal
Laura Curtin lived and worked among the curanderas and Native Americans of Northern New Mexico during the early part of the twentieth century. She fell in love with the plants and their lore, and later, at the prompting of a friend, decided to record them. Healing Herbs was first published in 1947, at a time when interest in traditional healing in Northern New Mexico was in decline. It helped preserve traditional information for a new generation -- when editor Michael Moore arrived in Santa Fe in the 1960s he found copies of Curtin's book as a prized possession in many traditional households. The book is unique in the literature of ethnobotany in that it was written essentially by an insider in the tradition, rather than by an observer doing interviews.

Excellent guide to herbal uses of native Southwestern plants
Living in the Southwestern Chihuahuan desert, I am always on the search for sources of information regarding local flora and particularly ethnobotanical uses of plants. This is an excellent guide originally published in 1947 and edited by Michael Moore who I consider to be an expert on herbal uses of native southwestern plants. For anyone interested in this subject, a fabulous resource to have in your library!

Illustrated Guide to Taping Techniques
Published in Paperback by Mosby (June, 1994)
Authors: Karin A. Austin, Kathryn A. Gwynn-Brett, and Sarah C. Marshall
Average review score:

Illustrated Guide to Taping Techniques
Since reading Illustrated Guide to Taping Techniques I have learned many different techniques used to tape a wide range of body parts and injuries. The information in this book is far more valuable then the money I payed for it. In addition to being very indepth with the tapings it also has sections that describe on what injuries the taping should be used and how to tell which taping to do before you apply any tape.

Illustrated guide to Taping Techniques gets thumbs up
Illustrated Guide To Taping Techniques is a very thorough and complete sports taping manual. It covers all taping, from the basic preventative taping to the more advanced injury specific taping. What I like about the book is that while it is concise, you do not have to be a physiotherapist to understand it. It gives easy to follow instructions along with labelled pictures of the techniques. This book is a must for anybody working as a sports trainer or remedial therapist and is very reasonably priced. I give this book my thumbs up and it certainly goes into the most used book pile in my collection.
